Honest Mini-Split Diagnosis and Repair

Our own technicians handle every repair. They don't work on commission and they don't have sales quotas, so there's no reason for anyone to push a new system when a repair will do the job.

Before any work starts, we explain what failed and what the fix costs. We photograph failed parts, including anything in the attic or crawlspace, so you can see what we found. If refrigerant is low, we find and repair the leak instead of just adding more. We're EPA 608 Universal certified for that work.

We're open 24/7, weekends included, and return calls within about an hour. You'll get a text when your technician is on the way. The diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair if you approve it.

We offer 5% off service work for active duty military, veterans, first responders, and teachers. Financing is available through Wisetack, subject to approval.

Common Mini-Split Problems We Fix

Most mini-split calls start with one of these:

A few quick checks can save you a call. Clean the filter if it looks dusty, clear leaves and debris away from the outdoor unit, and make sure the remote has fresh batteries and is set to cool or heat. If the problem is still there after that, give us a call.

  • Not cooling or not heating — dirty filters, a blocked outdoor coil, a refrigerant leak, or a failed part can all cut the output
  • Water dripping from the indoor unit — usually a drain problem, though not always; we cover the causes below
  • A blinking light or error code — the system is reporting a fault it detected
  • Ice on the indoor coil or the copper lines — this usually points to an airflow or refrigerant problem
  • A musty smell when it starts — buildup inside the indoor unit can cause odor
  • Won't turn on or won't respond to the remote — this can be power, the remote itself, or a control board

Why a Mini-Split Leaks Water Indoors

A mini-split pulls moisture out of the air as it cools. In a humid Upstate summer, that adds up to a lot of water. The indoor unit catches it in a drain pan and sends it outside through a drain line. A leak means something in that path isn't working.

If your unit is dripping, turn it off and wipe up the water to protect the wall and floor. Then check the filter. If the leak keeps going, we'll find the actual cause. That might mean clearing the drain, replacing the pan, repairing a refrigerant leak, or correcting how the unit was mounted so the problem doesn't come back.

  • A clogged drain line. Dust and algae build up and block the water's way out.
  • A dirty filter. Restricted airflow lets the coil freeze. When the ice melts, it overflows the pan.
  • A cracked or tilted drain pan. Water escapes before it reaches the drain.
  • Low refrigerant. A leak can also freeze the coil and cause the same overflow.
  • An install problem. An indoor unit that isn't level, or a drain line without enough downward slope, lets water pool and spill.

What a Blinking Mini-Split Light Means

A blinking light on the indoor unit is the system telling you it found a problem. The number of blinks, the light's color, or a code on the display points to a specific fault. Common ones include a sensor reading out of range, a drain issue, lost communication between the indoor and outdoor units, or a pressure or refrigerant problem.

Codes differ from brand to brand, so the same pattern can mean different things on two systems. On some systems, a slow blink during heating just means the outdoor unit is defrosting. That's normal and stops on its own.

When the light keeps blinking and the unit stops running, write down what you see before you call. Note how many blinks, what color, and what the system was doing. Turning the unit off and back on may clear the code for a while, but if it comes back, the fault is still there. We use the code as a starting point and then test the part it points to, so the repair goes after the actual cause.

Repairing vs. Replacing a Mini-Split

Most mini-split problems are worth repairing. A clogged drain, a failed sensor, or a single worn part can usually be fixed and the system goes back to running well.

When it's close, we lay out both options with real numbers and let you decide. If your existing system is beyond economical repair, we can walk you through ductless mini-split installation options.

  • The system keeps losing refrigerant even after leak repairs
  • A major part like the compressor has failed on an older unit
  • The repair cost comes close to the cost of a new system
  • The unit never kept up with the room because it was the wrong size from the start

Everyday Mini-Split Care

A little routine care goes a long way:

Buildup deeper inside the unit, on the coil and blower wheel, needs a technician to clean safely.

  • Clean the filters when they look dusty or the filter light comes on — many indoor units have washable filters you can rinse, let dry, and slide back in
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear — trim shrubs back and clear leaves, grass clippings, and storm debris away from it
  • Pick heat or cool instead of auto — that keeps the system from switching modes on days when the weather can't make up its mind
  • Hold a steady temperature — big setbacks don't save much with a heat pump and make it work harder to recover
  • Watch for water — drips, stains, or a gurgling sound from the indoor unit are worth a call before they turn into wall damage

What Happens During a Repair Visit

  1. 1You call or request service. We answer around the clock and return calls within about an hour.
  2. 2We head your way. We aim for same-day service, and you'll get a text when your technician is on the way.
  3. 3We find the cause. We read any error code, then check the filters, drain, electrical connections, and refrigerant.
  4. 4We explain before we fix. You'll hear what failed and what the repair costs, with photos of the failed parts.
  5. 5We repair and test. After the repair, we test the system in both cooling and heating before we leave, and clean up the work area.

AC wasn’t cooling and I also found multiple gallons of water just sitting inside one of my AC ducts. I went on facebook and noticed multiple people referring Rhino HVAC, so I decided to give them a call. They were able to come out the next day, evacuate the water, diagnose, and repair my AC system. Jame is a wonderful person, he helped me save a lot of money by identifying the problem with my AC and fixing it-even though another company had told me I needed to replace the unit entirely, which would have been very expensive.

Our house HVAC system not been serviced in too long of time I'm embarrassed to say. Rhino HVAC was friendly, informative and prompt with sending a tech to our house for service. Our tech James went through the whole system thoroughly, patiently and was completely knowledgeable. And he did it with a sincere and friendly customer service attitude. He showed us a few mandatory points of how we can keep things in good condition in between services such as timing of replacing filters, keeping the condensers clear enough from our garden growth and more. He also pointed out the 100% need for a kill switch to our unit in the attic to prevent any flooding damage that would occur if our unit had a water issue-A small cost to prevent a major one! We have "found" our HVAC go to. I highly recommend Rhino HVAC.

My mom needed her AC looked at and these guys were recommended on a local Facebook page. She called, they answered right away and were at her house same day to take a look! They were back the next day to get a new unit installed. They were prompt and courteous. They kept everything neat, tidy, and clean the whole time they were there. They explained everything through out the process and worked extremely hard to get her up and running. My mom had nothing but good things to say about them and will highly recommend. Key takeaways: Respectful, reliable, courteous, clean, great to work with. Thank you guys for taking care of my mom!

Ronnie gives the kind of service and honest answers you’d expect from an experienced HVAC guy. After nearly being hustled into buying a whole new HVAC by one of those “local” private equity companies, I contacted Ronnie. Ronnie was helpful and took the time to talk through everything. Very knowledgeable, friendly. He’s honest without having to tell you he’s an honest guy. Highly recommend.

Rhino HVAC came highly recommended in a local FB group, by numerous members. When I first called no one answered, and I have anxiety so I just hung up without leaving a message and continued being stressed out…🤷‍♀️😵‍💫 I received a call back from Ronnie fifteen minutes later and as he was in the area, was at my house and diagnosing the issue within twenty minutes. I don’t think you can get a quicker response time than that! As a less than experienced homeowner with this kind of stuff, and a solo female, I felt very comfortable with Ronnie in my home, very respectful, cleanly and well presenting-no creepy vibes at all-which is a concern of mine from previous experiences. He was clear about delivering the information he gave me about what he was going to do initially, and after assessing, clearly communicated what the issue was and a clear quote to fix it. Ronnie continued to be on top of things ordering the part as soon as I gave the go ahead for the job, picking the part up as soon as it was available and on his way to my house as soon as he got it. I felt like a priority with the all consistent communication. After Ronnie fixed my AC(yay!!!)…he also took the time to go under my crawl space and let me know about a potential fire hazard with how my unit was apparently setup before I purchased the home, and gave me a reliable referral to a local electrician who could help with that. Ronnie really went the extra mile with great service and results and I will definitely use Rhino HVAC in the future should I need to. Thanks again, Ronnie for your time and effort!❄️🥶

Ductless Mini-Split Repair FAQs

Can you come out the same day?

We aim for same-day service. You'll get a text when your technician is on the way so you're not stuck waiting at the window.

Is there a charge for a service call?

Yes, a diagnostic fee applies. It's credited toward the repair if you approve it.

Why is my mini-split blowing warm air in cooling mode?

Start by checking the filter and making sure the remote is set to cool. If it still blows warm, the usual causes are a blocked outdoor coil, low refrigerant from a leak, or a failed part, and those need a technician.

Should there be ice on my outdoor unit in winter?

A light layer of frost in heating mode is normal, and the system clears it with a defrost cycle. Thick ice that doesn't go away usually points to an airflow or refrigerant problem.

Do you just add refrigerant if it's low?

No. Low refrigerant means there's a leak somewhere. We find and repair the leak, then charge the system correctly.

Is financing available for repairs?

Yes. Financing is available through Wisetack, subject to approval, and we'll explain the terms before the repair begins.

Do you offer any discounts?

We offer 5% off service work for active duty military, veterans, first responders, and teachers. Just let us know when you book so we can confirm eligibility.
